Caps Practice!

We are a hockey family….Art and our son both played ice hockey, and we are loyal Washington Capitals fans.

We certainly enjoy games, however those do not really lend themselves to taking photos, so the next best thing? Caps Practice!

Yesterday and today we spent a couple of hours watching and taking photos at the Washington Caps practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. There are a few challenges with taking photos at practice, and some things we learned to manage those challenges:

  1. The glass you take photos through has multiple puck marks. We try to find a mostly clear spot on the glass to position our lenses.
  2. The lighting reflects off the glass. We find we play with our ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed settings to balance things out. Due to lighting, I have found I can’t let my ISO get too high and noisy.
  3. Be patient and wait for a shot: the team is practicing, and just as we might have the perfect photo set up for a player to take a shot, someone will skate in front of it!

While these are challenges, they are part of what makes this a great bit of fun! We spend some time taking photos and then put down our cameras and appreciate the incredible athletes we are watching.

Here are a couple of photos from our most recent visits to practice. I used some of my photo artistry to create pieces to highlight the player, and get rid of all the distraction in the background.

Art has been inspired and developed his own photo artistic look for his photos:

Best free ticket in town! Just pay a dollar for parking, and it will be the best dollar you ever spent!
